Slab of granite falls off truck at 23rd and Iowa streets, lanes blocked

A slab of granite fell off a flat-bed truck and into the intersection of 23rd and Iowa streets Thursday afternoon, forcing crews to close a few lanes of traffic while they removed the shattered rock.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, the truck was carrying large sheets of granite. Part of the load came off the truck and fell into the road about 12:30 p.m., shattering into pieces. Bordman said they were investigating how the rock came off the truck.

“There’s a couple thousand pounds of granite in the roadway,” Bordman said.

Patrol cars are blocking multiple lanes in the intersection while the rock is cleaned up.
