40 years ago: Serious crime in Lawrence shows increase higher than national average

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 31, 1971:

  • According to reports released by the FBI and the Lawrence Police Department, serious crime in Lawrence in 1970 had increased slightly more than the 11 percent national average. Serious crimes, described as murder and manslaughter, rape, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, auto theft and grand theft, had increased in the city about 15 percent over the 1969 figures.
  • In a letter to the editor, Charles Lacey of 2711 Oxford Road used verse to express his appreciation of the KU Jayhawks, who had just finished their basketball season: “A number of things can bring fame; Like a riot, or buildings aflame; But we’d rather choose, As a way to make news; Some boys who play a great game.”
  • Kansas University police were planning to question a student living in Oliver Hall about two plants, reportedly marijuana, growing in his room.
