Wichita ? A federal judge has set May trials for the owners of two Wichita grocery stores accused of trading cash for customers’ food stamps at a profit.

Thirteen people are charged in two federal indictments alleging schemes that defrauded the government out of more than $580,000.

U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten on Friday set a May 17 trial date for Ahmed Ajami Al-Maleki, the owner of Kansas Food Market.

A separate trial is scheduled May 24 for Muhammad Qadeer Akram and his wife, Shama Qadeer, owners of Alnoor Grocery.

The alleged runner for both grocery stores, Wally Mikhael Gaggo, is charged in both indictments. Nine food stamp recipients also face charges related to the scheme.
