25 years ago: Lawrence loses ‘Best Tasting Drinking Water’ contest

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 28, 1986:

  • Lawrence had lost in a drinking contest recently — but alcohol was not involved. The issue at hand was which city had the best-tasting drinking water. El Dorado, 34 miles northeast of Wichita, had won the state title at the annual conference of the Kansas Section of the American Water Works Association. Other cities competing had been Olathe, Topeka, Arkansas City, Manhattan, Wichita, Kansas City, Kansas, Johnson County, and Lawrence. Judging was based on clarity, color, odor and flavor.
  • First- and second-graders at Cordley Elementary School had sent heart-shaped birthday cards to President Reagan in February, and the mail had recently brought them a thank-you letter, which included a picture of the president and Mrs. Reagan and their dog. The letter was autographed, and included a dog’s paw print.
