Wichita teacher plans to fight law prohibiting sex with adult students

? A former Northwest High School choir teacher plans to fight a state law that prohibits sex with adult students.

Thirty-year-old Charles L. Edwards was convicted Thursday of having unlawful sex with a student. He admitted to having sex with an 18-year-old female student while teaching vocal music at Wichita Northwest High School.

Edwards’ attorney, Steve Mank, says Edwards agreed to the conviction so he could appeal the state law that makes it illegal to have sex with a student of any age.

Mank told the Wichita Eagle that he plans to argue on appeal that the law is unconstitutional when it involves consensual sex with an adult student.

Edwards will be sentenced May 17.
