From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 10, 1986:

Two law enforcement officers were injured in a Kansas Turnpike car collision during a high-speed chase near Topeka involving two suspects who had fled a gas station without paying. Upon reaching Lawrence, the suspects had abandoned their car, which was suspected to have been stolen, and fled on foot. At this point, Lawrence police joined the highway patrol officers and sheriff’s department in searching for the men. In all, five law enforcement agencies and a canine unit from Lenexa hunted for the pair, who were finally apprehended near the Lawrence Holidome, thanks to a tip from a worker at the All-Star Dairy.

Kansas University was on its way to the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Number 2 KU had squeezed by Iowa State in the Big Eight post-season tournament and would face North Caroline A & T in Dayton in the first round.

A month-long dry spell in Lawrence finally came to an end when howling winds ushered in record temperatures of 79 degrees and .72 of an inch of rain.
