From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 6, 1986:

• On a 3-2 vote, Lawrence city commissioners approved new handgun regulations including the establishment of a 72-hour waiting period at time of purchase. Mayor Mike Amyx and Commissioner Ernest Angino were opposed to the measure, even suggesting holding a referendum before taking action. John Barrett, a representative of the National Rifle Assn., submitted a petition signed by over 640 city residents and even more county residents opposed to the regulation. James Ludwig, owner of JPL Gun Shoppe, vowed to sue the city and seek an injunction against enforcement of the new regulations.
• During an armed robbery of the School Employees’ Credit Union, 1015 W. Sixth, Lawrence police shot and wounded one of the two men involved. The wounded man, 19, was listed in fair condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper right arm.
