Kasold Drive construction between Clinton Parkway and 31st Street should finish by end of November

Workmen finish up the eastern side of Kasold Drive south of 23rd Street as single-lane traffic flows on the west lanes, at right, on Wednesday. The city began reconstruction of Kasold in late 2010; the project is expected to last several more months. The project is part of the city’s street maintenance program and is utilizing funding from the voter-approved infrastructure sales tax that was passed in 2008.

The reconstruction of Kasold Drive between Clinton Parkway and 31st Street is on pace to be finished by the end of November.

The $4.2 million project is a little more than halfway done, according to Mark Thiel, the city’s assistant director of public works. It will rebuild Kasold Drive as a four-lane road with turn lanes and sidewalk improvements.

In the next two or three weeks, the northbound lane will be shifted onto new pavement, while southbound traffic will remain on the old pavement, as crews work in the middle, Thiel said.

The project is largely funded by a 0.3 percent infrastructure sales tax approved by voters in 2008, along with some state transportation funds.

The sales tax will also pay for improvements to Kasold Drive in the north portion of Lawrence, between Trail and Peterson roads, part of a $1.3 million pavement maintenance program funded from various sources. That section will see landscaping replace asphalt in the median, as well as drainage improvements.

The city’s road maintenance program will begin next week, proceeding in the following order and ending by Sept. 30:

  • Crestline Drive from Westdale Road to Orchard Lane.
  • Hillview Road from 19th Terrace to 21st Street.
  • Ridge Court/Murphy Drive at West 24th Street.
  • Various sections of West 20th Street and Terrace and West 22nd Street and Terrace.
  • Tennessee Street from Ninth to 19th.
  • Kasold from Trail to Peterson.
