25 years ago: Eldridge residents prepare to vacate apartments

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 22, 1986:

The impending renovation of the 62-year-old Eldridge House from apartment house to hotel was welcome news for many in Lawrence, but for the current residents of the apartments, it was just another move. Tenants had until June 30 to find a new home, but as of this date, all but five had pulled up stakes and said good-bye. Resident John Dreiling said that he might be the last to move out, as he had not yet found – or searched for – a new apartment. “I like downtown Lawrence. It is easy to live here,” Dreiling said, adding that one of his favorite parts of living at the Eldridge had been the continental breakfasts every morning, where residents would meet to discuss and solve the world’s problems. Mrs. Muffie Brune, 86, said that she had enjoyed her 12 years in her Eldridge apartment, but she was looking forward to the amenities of her new home at the Malls Olde English Village. “Oh, I’m going to love it,” she said. “I’ll have a balcony and I can look over the swimming pool…. I’ll have a garbage disposal, which I haven’t had here, and there’s a dishwasher I haven’t had.”
