From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 21, 1986:

• For the second time in recent weeks, a deer had broken into a store on Massachusetts Street. After approaching downtown from a city park, the deer had paused for a moment before crashing directly through a plate-glass window at 722 Mass. A front-page photo shows the frightened animal running across the street after having been coaxed out of the store. Police reported that after heading into the woods behind the VFW building at 138 Alabama, the deer appeared to be “safe and secure.”
• The horses taking part in the Sunflower Benefit Horse Show were not complaining of the 90-plus temperatures today. Celia Miller, one of the show’s organizers, said that the horses would be fine as long as they had fans, lots of water, and plenty of shade. Mrs. Miller, who was also showing some of her horses, was featured in a photograph feeding her 4-year-old Arabian gelding Knamil Fanta Zee.
