Apartments on Fort Hays campus to be auctioned

? Apartments on the Fort Hays University campus will go up for auction this week.

The Stadium Place Apartments will be auctioned at a sheriff’s sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ellis County Courthouse.

Commerce Bank filed a foreclosure on the apartments. Bank president Tom Thomas says the bank’s attorney will make an opening bid to protect its interest.

Fort Hays official Mike Barnett says the university also plans to bid on the apartments.

In its foreclosure petition, Commerce Bank said Uniplace — a company created to build the apartments — was in default of about $3.79 million plus interest.

The Hays Daily News reports that the $5 million apartment complex opened for the 2005-06 school year, using city industrial revenue bonds.
