Two people were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Thursday morning after a two-vehicle accident near the intersection of 11th and Kentucky streets, said Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief Joe Hoelscher.

The crash occurred at 8:30 a.m.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said a 47-year-old Lawrence woman, Boonyang Sayvongsa, failed to stop her 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup truck at a red light while she was headed north on Kentucky Street. The pickup truck struck a 2004 Honda CRV vehicle that was headed east on 11th Street in the green light, Sarna said. The Honda also struck a parked vehicle.

The Honda’s driver was 64-year-old Linda Klinker of Lawrence. Both women were taken to LMH, but their injuries were not believed to be life threatening, Sarna and Hoelscher said.

Sarna said officers cited Sayvongsa for failing to stop at a steady red light.

Near the scene, Lawrence police officers had blocked traffic from going north on Kentucky Street as medics were helping Sayvongsa and Klinker, who were both treated and released from LMH, hospital spokeswoman Belinda Rehmer said.

Hoelscher said medics around the same time responded to a second accident near the intersection of Haskell Avenue and Pinecone Drive, but the person who had minor injuries was not taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The accidents were part of a busy morning for firefighters. A vehicle caught fire just before 9 a.m. in the parking lot of Ellsworth Hall, 1734 Engel Road, at Kansas University.

Hoelscher said the fire was extinguished, and no injuries were reported. Assistant Chief Chris Keary, of the KU Public Safety Office, said the truck had experienced a mechanical problem and caught fire.
