Topeka ? Topeka has a new attraction for children.

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center opened earlier this month in a 15,000 square-foot building. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that an outdoor learning environment will open one month later on July 1.

Organizers say the center is set up so parents can play alongside their children. Before the opening, Topeka was one of only five capital cities lacking a children’s museum.

Executive director Joanne Morrell says the center was able to learn from what worked elsewhere. It features exhibits that promote art, building skills, music, financial literacy and the environment.

One exhibit touches on the state’s agricultural heritage. It lets children work together to measure, pour, lift and transport grain through a machine that has conveyor belts, pulleys, augers and levers.
