40 years ago: Wescoe Hall construction proceeds on campus

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 9, 1971:

  • The front page featured a photo of a big construction site on campus. “Kansas University’s $8 million humanities building has been named Wescoe Hall, but in its current stage of construction it’s generally referred to as ‘Wescoe Hole,'” proclaimed the caption. The photographer had taken the shot from the sixth floor of Malott Hall looking toward Strong Hall. The site of the new building had formerly been filled by Old Haworth Hall and Old Robinson Gym.
  • Hundreds of junior high students had arrived at KU for the annual Midwestern Music and Art Camp. About 400 students were expected to attend the junior high session, which was to run through June 18. The senior high division was to run from June 20 to July 25.
