Norton drug store selected for national historic preservation competition

? A former drug store in the northwest Kansas town of Norton has been selected to participate in a national historic preservation competition.

The Moulton Drug Store, also known as the Heaton Building, is part of the “This Place Matters Community Challenge.” It is one of 100 buildings chosen from more than 300 nominated nationwide.

The top three vote-getters will receive grants, with the top prize of $25,000.

The Hays Daily News reports that the building is one of 61 in downtown Norton. It’s part of an area designated as state and national historic district in 2010. The Norton County Community Foundation is restoring the building, with work expected to begin this summer.

The challenge is sponsored by the Fireman’s Fund and National Trust Insurance Service.
