KU junior pitcher Colton Murray picked by Philadelphia in Round 13

Kansas University junior pitcher Colton Murray was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in Tuesday’s amateur baseball draft with the last pick of the 13th round.

Murray, a 6-foot, 190-pound closer for the Jayhawks in 2011, was the first KU player chosen in this year’s draft.

In his career, Murray went 6-9 with a 3.89 ERA in 80 games, and all but two were out of the bullpen. He recorded 11 saves and 108 strikeouts in 111 innings. His 11 saves are fourth all-time at KU.

Murray’s selection in the 13th round marks the third-straight season that KU has had a player drafted in the top 15 rounds. He joins David Narodowski (15th round, 2009); Tony Thompson (sixth round, 2010) and Robby Price (13th round, 2010).

Earlier in the day Tuesday, KU signee, Cody Kukuk, a standout from Free State High, was picked in the seventh round by the Boston Red Sox.

Today’s portion of the draft is expected to run through 20 rounds. Several other Jayhawks could get drafted today or tomorrow.
