McLouth High School students and district sponsors returned safely Friday evening from their Spanish Club’s trip to Costa Rica, the McLouth school district announced in a release Saturday.

The trip was shortened after McLouth High School student Justin Johnston died early Thursday, the victim of an early morning shooting.

Johnston, 16, was on a nine-day trip with 12 students and two district sponsors. The students’ trip was arranged through EF Educational Tours based in Cambridge, Mass. Counselors were made available to the students and staff upon their return.

“We are happy and relieved to have the students home, and will work to support them during this difficult time,” said Steve Splichal, school superintendent. “Our district is extremely concerned for the Johnston family, and also for the many other students and staff members who are affected by this tragedy. We will continue to make counselors available on an as-needed basis for them.”

In addition, the school district continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

District officials are working with the United States Embassy in Costa Rica and the U.S. State Department to gather accurate information as it becomes available.

“The district is carefully reviewing its policies and procedures to ensure that students and staff are safe

as they participate in future activities,” Splichal said.
