From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 4, 1986:

• A big change came to a local organization when Tamika Walker, 8, became the first girl to pay her $1 summer enrollment fee and join the Boys’ Club of Lawrence. After 13 years of existence, the club, located in a blue-painted building at 500 E. 23rd, had opened its doors to girls for the summer. In another year, officials said, they hoped to include all children in their programs year-round. Meanwhile, not all of the young men were positive about the change. “It’s getting out of hand,” grumbled 9-year-old James Shoup. “Maybe I’ll go out and join the Girl Scouts.”
• The Litwin’s store in downtown Lawrence had been purchased by Lawrence Litwin of Topeka. Litwin was a cousin of the former owners of the store, which had been operating at 830 Massachusetts for about 40 years. The new owner also owned the three stores by the same name in Topeka.
