From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 3, 1971:

• The two employees of the Lawrence office of Western Union had a day off today, while the acceptance and delivery of telegrams and money orders was temporarily halted. The local office, along with offices nationwide, had shut its doors this morning due to the strike by the United Telegraph Workers and the Communications Workers of America.
• The Cutler Repaving Inc. plant and facilities, located in the Lawrence Industrial park near 27th and Haskell, announced an expansion which would double the size of the local employment force. The expansion, expected to cost well over $100,000, was to add about 1,200 square feet of space for general offices as well as 5,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The company, with operations in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Topeka, had moved its headquarters from Chicago to Lawrence 3 1/2 years earlier.
