Lawrence High School teacher injured in St. Louis crash still in serious condition

A Lawrence High School teacher remains listed in serious condition at a St. Louis hospital Wednesday after he was injured in an accident last week in Collinsville, Ill.

Laura Keller, a St. Louis University Hospital spokeswoman, said David Platt, 44, an LHS social studies teacher, remained in serious condition. Corey Roelofs, 28, of Kansas City, Kan., who drove the vehicle Platt was riding in, was released from the hospital late Tuesday, Keller said.

Roelofs and Platt were traveling May 26 in a Honda Civic along Interstate 70 east of St. Louis when the car was struck head-on by a vehicle that crossed the median and broke through a cable barrier. The driver of the vehicle that crossed the median, Bethany Budwell, 16, died in the accident.

LHS principal Matt Brungardt said last week that Platt had broken several bones but that his injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
