40 years ago: Young boys discover marijuana stash under bridge

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 1, 1971:

  • Four youngsters playing under a small bridge about five miles west of Lawrence had discovered a metal box, about six by eight by 15 inches, containing several plastic bags of marijuana, three pipes, some razor blades, a leather pouch, and other items. The box, closed with a combination padlock, had been “pounded open” by the boys before they reported their find to the sheriff’s office.
  • The Mr. Steak restaurant at 920 W. 23rd Street had recently been chosen to receive the Environment Improvement Award of the Month, which was given by the Douglas County Environmental Improvement Council. The restaurant had sacrificed some concrete parking space and added some “simple and harmonious” landscaping. Restaurant owners had also opted for unobtrusive signage to enhance the non-commercial look of the site.
  • The two local Dillons stores, 1740 Massachusetts and Sixth and Michigan, announced their new expanded hours. The stores were to begin staying open until midnight Monday through Saturday and also between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays.
