25 years ago: Planning director estimates population for city, county

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 31, 1986:

  • City-county planning director Price Banks, referring to an estimate released by the U.S. Census Bureau, said that Lawrence was experiencing a “pretty good, healthy growth rate.” However, Banks said that the federal estimate of the current population was a little low. The planning department, which made its own estimates based on information such as building permits, was probably “a little closer to the mark,” said Banks, who offered an estimate of about 60,000 for the city population and 75,000 for the county.
  • The Lawrence area temperature topped 100 degrees for the first time this year, as the mercury reached 101. The temperatures had been hovering in the mid-90s for several days before that.
