From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 29, 1911:

• “Someone entered the Santa Fe depot at Lake View last night and got away with about $15 in cash and two gallons of whiskey that were in the freight room waiting for the consignee to call for it. The robbery was discovered this morning by C. I. Hoffman when he opened up the depot at 6 o’clock. On the floor of the room he found the money drawer, but it had been relieved of all its contents except a few money orders. Close beside the empty drawer was a lantern and an old pair of overalls. Otherwise the thief left no clue behind him except a few footprints around the depot, but as there are always many people about the depot at the lake these footprints will not develop into anything. Mr. Hoffman immediately notified the Lawrence and Douglas county officials of the robbery and they went to work on the case. They have but a very meager clue to work on as there was nothing left behind but the lantern and the overalls.”
• “All indications yesterday evening were that there would be something doing in the way of rain before morning, but the signs all failed and there was not a drop of moisture in this part of the country. Other sections fared better and report all the way from a light shower to a cloudburst.”
