Lawrence landscaping company donating services to nearby ‘Extreme Makeover Home Edition’

A family will be getting a new home next week, and a local landscaping company will be pitching in.

Lawrence Landscape, 600 Lincoln, received a call last week from producers at ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” asking if they’d like to donate their services for a new home to be built in the area.

“Everybody’s kind of excited,” said Glen Westervelt, co-owner.

The television show surprises needy families across the country by repairing or building them a new home within a week.

The site of the home will be announced Sunday, but show representatives said the project site is within 45 minutes of Lawrence.

Westervelt said they have the basic plans for the work they’ll do, which will require about 20 employees working shifts over 26 consecutive hours, starting Thursday. But, true to the surprise element of the show, they don’t have all the details, such as the location of the home.

“We’re going in blind,” he said. “We’ve never done this before. It’ll be a challenge.”

The company is donating labor and supplies for its portion of the project. While the business will get some national exposure, Westervelt said it was a good opportunity to help a local family.

“You’re doing something good for someone in need,” he said.
