12:02 a.m. update:

The heat wave that’s made its way across the eastern portion of the state the last few days is set to subside this evening.

The National Weather service extended the excessive heat warning through 7 p.m. A 30 percent chance of rain may help the cause Thursday, although the high temperature is still expected to be near or exceed 100 degrees.

Wednesday 8 a.m. update

Exactly 176 days ago, Lawrence was buried under a mountain of snow. Today, Lawrence suffers under an excessive heat warning with high temperatures forecast for 104 and heat indices of 110 or higher.

The National Weather Service extended the excessive heat warning. It’s in effect until 7 p.m. on Thursday. There’s some hope for a brief cool down on Friday and Saturday as storms move in, but the heat returns on Sunday.

There have been several heat-related deaths reported throughout the Kansas City metro, so remember to check in on neighbors and relatives — especially the elderly — and to give pets shelter and plenty of water.
