40 years ago: Voters to decide on bond issues for new ‘governmental center’ near courthouse

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 28, 1971:

  • Officials from Lawrence and Douglas County announced their intention to ask county voters to approve a $6 million bond issue in September. The funds would be used to finance a proposed city-county governmental center east of the county courthouse. The complex, which was estimated to cost $5 million and fees, was to house county and city administrative offices as well as police, sheriff and judicial facilities.
  • The Governor’s Committee on Criminal Administration had approved a request to provide nearly $25,000 in federal funds to help Atty. Gen. Vern Miller continue his crackdown on Kansas narcotics traffic.
  • The second major storm in less than a week hit Lawrence hard with 1.25 inches of rain, mostly during late-evening thunderstorms that knocked out power in several sections of town.
