Excessive heat warning extended to Sunday evening; temperatures climb highest so far this year

Midnight update:

Friday afternoon saw temperatures reach their highest point in the area this year, topping out at 103 degrees according to readings taken at the Lawrence Municipal Airport.

With those figures in place, the National Weather Service extended the excessive heat warning for Douglas County and the majority of eastern Kansas. The excessive heat warning will run through 7 p.m. Sunday and temperatures during that time are expected to be between 100 and 105 degrees. Afternoons are expected to be the hottest, with anticipated temperatures reaching 110 degrees. The nights won’t provide much relief, only cooling into the 70s.

The intense heat will make heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps more likely for those outside for prolonged periods of time.

Anyone planning to spend time outside should take the necessary precautions, including drinking lots of water and wearing loose-fitting clothing.

A reminder for anyone wanting to escape the heat this weekend: There are a number of public buildings in Douglas County that will be open for visitors to get a break from the high temperatures.
