Assaria teenager pleads not guilty in stepbrother’s death

? A 15-year-old rural Assaria boy pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the shooting death of his 9-year-old stepbrother.

The teenager is being tried as an adult in the June 1, 2010, death of his stepbrother at their home in rural Assaria, a few miles outside Salina. He entered his plea Wednesday in Saline County Court.

The Salina Journal reports that teen’s bond was set at $250,000. His trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 30.

The two boys were home alone when the shooting occurred. The suspect called 911 and said the shooting was accidental, but investigators concluded otherwise.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify minors accused of a crime and has withheld the victim’s name because he was related to the suspect.
