Maple Hill girl remains in critical condition after Sunday morning bike accident

A 13-year-old Maple Hill girl who was injured during a bicycle ride Sunday morning south of Lawrence was listed in critical condition Monday at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, Mo., a hospital spokeswoman said.

Mikal A. Bond was taken via helicopter ambulance to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., after the 7:30 a.m. accident at North 1100 Road and County Road 1055 about 2 miles south of Lawrence, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Troopers have said the girl failed to stop at a stop sign while headed east on North 1100 Road and collided with a southbound white Ford pickup truck on 1055 Road, which is Haskell Avenue south of Lawrence.

The truck was driven by Kathy Robb, 46, of Melvern, who was not injured. Mikal was riding as part of the Lizard Under the Skillet bike ride organized by the Lawrence Bicycle Club. Club members said they hope Mikal has a speedy recovery.

Trooper Casey Simoneau said at 11 a.m. Monday Mikal was in critical to stable condition at the hospital.
