Douglas County prosecutors Friday afternoon filed three misdemeanor eavesdropping charges against a 39-year-old Lawrence man who was accused of video taping three children without their knowledge, according to district court records.

Lawrence police Thursday afternoon arrested the man after he was accused of video taping a 14-year-old girl without her consent or knowledge.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a police spokesman, said the girl’s aunt called police Wednesday and alleged the suspect taped the victim on several occasions in the first part of June at a residence in southern Lawrence. The man was also accused of doing the same thing to two other children, ages 13 and 14, during that time at the residence.

Sarna said the suspect knew all of the alleged victims. Officers interviewed the man and arrested him Thursday afternoon on suspicion of sexual exploitation of a child and eavesdropping, according to jail records, but prosecutors had only filed the three misdemeanor eavesdropping charges Friday.

According to information filed in court, prosecutors accuse the man of installing or using a camera to secretly tape the children “under or through the clothing being worn” while they were nude or in a state of undress.

Chief District Judge Robert Fairchild set the man’s bond at $2,000, cash or surety, and ordered him not to have contact with the children if he gets out of jail. A hearing in the case is scheduled for Thursday.
