40 years ago: Start, end times shuffled for Lawrence schools

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 8, 1971:

  • Schools in Lawrence were undergoing a slight change in hours. Elementary schools were still to open at 8:30 a.m. in the fall, but opening time at the high school was changed to 8:20 a.m. An optional attendance period at Lawrence High School was to be changed from the first early-morning period to the 2:00 to 3:00 period at the end of the day. Because of bus schedules, the three junior high schools were to have staggered hours, with South opening at 8:40, West at 8:30, and Central 8:20.
  • A group called “Project One” made a protest to the Lawrence Board of Education on the grounds that there were no black teachers on the staff of LHS.
