Prosecutors file 11 charges against man involved in domestic disturbance

Douglas County prosecutors have filed 11 charges against a 48-year-old rural Lawrence man who sheriff’s officers used a Taser to subdue after he refused to obey their commands Wednesday afternoon after a 911 call.

According to court records, prosecutors charged Martin Dean Wales Thursday with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, intimidation of a witness or victim, criminal damage to property, domestic battery, making a criminal threat, three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and two counts of interfering with duties of an officer.

Sheriff’s officers said they responded to a 911 hang-up call, and a woman left the house in the 1700 block of East 1350 Road, just east of Michigan Street in Lawrence. The woman was injured and taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Officers allege Wales refused to comply with demands to leave the house. The woman gave them a key, and officers subdued Wales with a Taser. They took him to be check at LMH before he was booked into Douglas County Jail.

During a first appearance a judge set his bond at $20,000, cash or surety.
