Wichita man sentenced to 8 years in bank robbery

? A 29-year-old Wichita man who was shot by police after a bank holdup is going to prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says Shelan Peters was sentenced Tuesday to eight years and one month in federal prison. He pleaded guilty earlier to one count of bank robbery in the December 2010 holdup of Equity Bank in Wichita.

Peters admitted being one of three men involved in the holdup, in which two of the suspects were armed.

The robbers drove off with police and the FBI in pursuit, then ditched their car at an apartment building and took off on foot. Authorities said Peters was shot by a Wichita police officer when he reached for a gun.

Peters’ two co-defendants in the holdup face trial July 19.
