40 years ago: Record crowd gathers in KU stadium for fireworks

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 5, 1971:

  • A record crowd of about 16,000 persons had gathered on the previous night in Kansas University Memorial Stadium for a fireworks display. The 18th annual show, sponsored by the Lawrence Jaycees, was also witnessed by hundreds more people seated on the grassy slopes between the stadium and the KU Campanile.
  • The Kansas State Historical Society had contacted the Kansas Highway Commission about several cities along the route of planned work on K-10. The historical society said that some of the cities might be of “archeological value,” and these were being reviewed by the commission for possible further study. New lanes were to be added that would parallel the existing roadway from K-7 east to Renner Road as well as west from K-7 to a point one mile south of DeSoto.
