Great weekend

A special event organized by local businesses provides a great finale for our Fourth of July celebration.

Even in turbulent times, America has a lot to celebrate. The Declaration of Independence signed 235 years ago was the first step in a process that founded a nation that still is the envy of the world.

There are challenges, to be sure, but our democratic principles and institutions have seen us through difficult times before, and we have confidence that they won’t fail us now.

Today also is a great time for Lawrence residents to celebrate as a community. The Tour of Lawrence cycling competition has brought many guests to our city this weekend and provided a fun opportunity for local residents of all ages to watch and participate in a top-notch event.

This afternoon the Lawrence Originals will be set up in Watson Park downtown for their third annual “Party in the Park.” Locally owned restaurants will be serving food throughout the afternoon while bands provide musical entertainment. The grand finale for the weekend will be the Jaycees fireworks display, starting at about 9:45 p.m.

Hopefully, the third time will be the charm for this event. The first year, too much of the fireworks display failed to clear the visual barrier posed by trees at the north end of the park, and, last year, an untimely storm put a damper on the festivities. It’s hard to escape the heat in Kansas in July, but that shouldn’t keep people from enjoying the event this year.

The Party in the Park is a wonderful gift to the community from the Lawrence Originals. It gives the local restaurants an opportunity to showcase their wares, and it’s also a great way to bring the community together to celebrate this patriotic American holiday.

Have a great time with family and friends today and take a few minutes to acknowledge and appreciate the great attributes of this nation and the democratic principles that have served it so well.

Happy Fourth of July.
