From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 29, 1986:

• An estimated crowd of 1,000 people, including schoolchildren, attended the official Kansas Day ceremony at noon on the south steps of the Kansas Capitol. The 125th birthday of Kansas was heralded by cannon fire and low-flying jets, speeches and the state song, and more than 100 birthday cakes served up inside the Capitol Rotunda.
• Local motorists were finding gas prices in Lawrence to be a bargain. Some stations were selling regular (leaded) gasoline for as much as 13 cents a gallon cheaper than two weeks previously, and as much as 16 percent below the national average. Current prices in Lawrence were as low as 89.9 per gallon.
• A bill had been approved that would loosen residency requirements at Kansas Board of Regents institutions, which would in turn give some students a break on tuition. The bill would reduce residency requirements from one year to six months and would waive the six-month requirement for people who had moved to Kansas for employment reasons.
