40 years ago: Bill introduced in Kansas House to abolish daylight savings time

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 23, 1971:

  • More new bills were introduced into the Kansas House today. One bill proposed to abolish daylight saving time in Kansas. The Kansas Senate also heard a resolution calling on Congress to modify the Uniform Time Act of 1966, making it possible that each state could set its own period of daylight saving time. Another bill called for a study of no-fault automobile insurance.
  • Officials of the Kansas Highway Department had sent a report to the Douglas County Commission stating that there were no state or federal funds available for the construction of a second Kansas River bridge in Lawrence. Commissioners insisted that they were not ready to drop the bridge issue.
  • About $400 in damages resulted from a siege of vandalism at the Sunflower West Elementary School overnight. The school, 13 miles east of Lawrence and just north of the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, had been found to have about half of its classrooms vandalized, as well as the office and teachers’ lounge. Books, paper, others supplies, and equipment had been found scattered on the floors, fire extinguishers had been sprayed throughout the hallways, and dozens of cartons of milk tossed around the cafeteria.
