Haskell women rally

Sharon Forte scored 20 points and the Haskell Indian Nations University women’s basketball team used a massive second-half surge to defeat Oklahoma Wesleyan, 59-44, on Friday at Coffin Complex.

The Fightin’ Indians trailed Wesleyan, 26-18, at halftime. Haskell erupted for 41 points in the second half and held Wesleyan to only 18.

“I don’t know how it happened,” Haskell coach Phil Homeratha said, laughing. “Thank goodness for our pressure defense. We finally came alive.”

The Fightin’ Indians forced 21 turnovers total, and Homeratha said that was the main reason they won.

Haskell shot only 18 percent (6-of-33) in the first half.

“That was an all-time low for one of my teams,” Homeratha said.

Autumn Burtt and Lois Stevens had 10 points a piece for Haskell, which improved to 6-9.

The Fightin’ Indians will face Southwest Christian (Okla.) University at 3 p.m. today.
