25 years ago: SRS given temporary custody of abandoned baby

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 22, 1986:

  • More details were emerging on the case of the baby boy found in the stairwell of Alabama Place Apartments on Jan. 19. Police believed that the infant had been abandoned between 1:40 and 2:00 p.m., but he had not been discovered until 5:30 p.m. when two Kansas University students who lived at the apartments notified police. SRS had been given temporary care of the baby, who was still at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
  • The Evans Scholars fraternity, located at 1942 Stewart Ave., was to close in May. The state of Kansas was no longer producing enough applicants, who were required to have experience as golf caddies, to keep the organization at KU.
  • The KU Jayhawks had been projected into the Big Eight’s No. 1 spot after a 98-92 victory over previously unbeaten Oklahoma in Allen Fieldhouse.
