6 trial judges apply for Kansas Court of Appeals

? Six Kansas trial judges are among 19 applicants for a seat on the state Court of Appeals.

The opening gives Gov. Sam Brownback his first appellate court appointment. A nominating commission plans to interview the candidates Feb. 17 and 18 and select three finalists from which the new Republican governor will choose.

The vacancy results from former Democratic Gov. Mark Parkinson’s promotion of Appeals Judge Nancy Moritz Caplinger to the Supreme Court earlier this month.

The applicants include District Court Judges David Bruns of Shawnee County; Jeff Jack, of Labette County; Steven Montgomery, of Miami County, and Kim Schroeder, of Stevens County.

Also applying were District Magistrates Steven Roth, of Pottawatomie County, and Guy Steier, of Cloud County.
