From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 20, 1971:

• Douglas County Welfare officials were investigating two cases in which Kansas University students were reportedly receiving welfare assistance. Such assistance was in violation of a county commission ruling denying welfare to students.
• The official Douglas County population had surpassed 55,000 according to the most recent census. Nearly all of the 10 elected county officials were scheduled to receive statutory pay increases this month, as state law set the 55,000 population level as a dividing line, in most cases, for elected officials’ salaries.
• Four candidates had filed for the Lawrence city commission so far. They were David Burnett, a pilot for Braniff Airlines; Robert Sneegas, a local carpenter; Philip Stockton, an industrial psychologist; and Charles Fisher, a retail pharmacist.
