Wichita State grad designs postage stamp celebrating neon

? A Wichita State University graduate student has designed a U.S. postage stamp that celebrates neon.

Michael Flechtner was asked to do the neon stamp — the first of its kind — after U.S. Postal Service Art Director Phil Jordan saw Flechtner’s work hanging at the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles.

The stamp, which includes neon fireworks, will be released March 25. Flechtner, 59, says he was told the theme should be “Celebrate” and fireworks seemed like a natural representation of the theme.

The Wichita Eagle reported Monday that Flechtner, originally from Tiffin, Ohio, graduated from Wichita State in 1984 with a master’s degree in fine arts.
