From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 17, 1971:

• Members of the Kansas Board of Regents were planning to ask the 1971 Legislature for $58,900 to repair damages to Kansas University’s Summerfield Hall, which had been partially destroyed by a bomb blast on Dec. 11, 1970. The funds were intended to restore the damaged areas, replace equipment, and make changes in the building to prevent another bombing incident.
• In Washington, the Department of Transportation said it was holding to its July 1, 1973, deadline for installation of “so-called air bags” in new cars. Auto makers were aggressively resisting the deadline, which had already been postponed twice.
• A report from some noted sociology professors indicated that premarital sex was on the increase, having risen from 10 percent to 30 percent in recent years in the more conservative regions of the nation, and from 30 to 50 percent in the “more liberal areas.”
