25 years ago: KU, Haskell sponsor symposium on Indian prehistory

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 14, 1986:

  • Haskell Indian Junior College and Kansas University were co-sponsoring an upcoming symposium on ethical, legal, and scientific issues related to Indian prehistory. Featured speakers were Walter Echo-Hawk, staff attorney for the Native American Rights Fund in Boulder, Colo., and Dena Dincauze, professor of anthropology at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
  • The Douglas County commissioners met with a member of a county task force to discuss the needs of persons with mental illnesses. Members of the Task Force for Residential and Vocational Services for the Chronically Mentally Ill believed that the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center was the appropriate agency to assess and fill these needs in the community.
  • Lawrence police were searching for clues in a rash of car break-ins and vandalism over the past several days. At least 17 people in different parts of the city had reported incidents such as broken windows, punctured tires, and items stolen from cars.
