How to Help: United Way seeking MLK Day of Service volunteers

The United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center still needs more than 20 volunteers for service projects on the MLK Day of Service, next Monday. Community members are encouraged to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day by participating in volunteer opportunities at Habitat for Humanity, Habitat ReStore, or Tenants to Homeowners Inc.

• Headquarters Counseling Center is seeking interested volunteers for its 24/7 counseling center. No previous training or experience is needed, but volunteers must be at least 20 years old and have at least a full year of living independently of a parent/guardian. Informational meetings will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 19 and Jan. 24 at the Lawrence Public Library auditorium, 707 Vt., and from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 27 at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. • Douglas County Senior Services and the city of Lawrence are continuing their long-running Safe Winter Walkways Program. They are currently seeking community volunteers who can help shovel snow this winter for residents who aren’t able to do it themselves. Volunteers will be given one address at the beginning of the snow season that they will be responsible for shoveling after each snowfall. • The Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers to be a part of its Peer-to-Peer Support Program (PSP). PSP is a 10-week mental health intervention that consists of pairing a volunteer (at least 55 years old) with a participant receiving Medicaid-HCBS/FE services. The pair will meet for a minimum of one hour for 10 weeks. During meetings, participants are encouraged and supported by volunteers to establish and work toward goals that participants feel would improve their mental health and well-being. Volunteers should have access to transportation, must pass a criminal background check and be able to commit one hour of time per week. • Independence Inc. is in search of volunteers to staff a computer lab. Examples of duties include teaching adults with disabilities how to navigate the Internet or set up e-mail, answering general computer questions from lab users and assisting users of self-paced learning software. Shifts are flexible, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Volunteers need to be very comfortable using a computer and teaching basic computer skills to others.
