40 years ago: Kansas teacher salaries ranked 38th in U.S.

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 9, 1971:

  • A recent report from the Kansas-National Education Association said that Kansas teacher salaries were ranked 38th in the nation. The average Kansas teacher, according to the report, had 12 years experience, 128 college hours, and a salary of $8,034. For two years, Kansas had led the nation in proportion of elementary and secondary teachers holding master’s degrees.
  • The Gaslight Tavern, 1241 Oread, had received the city staff’s approval for a cereal malt beverage license for 1971. Final approval was still to come from the City Commission. The Draught House, 804 W. 24th, and the Ramada Inn at Sixth and Iowa, both of which had held licenses the previous year, were as yet unapproved for 1971. The Virginia Inn on West Sixth and the Rathskellar at 119 1/2 E. Eighth had not applied for new licenses.
  • Movies playing in Lawrence this week included “Patton,” “Hello Dolly,” “Rio Lobo,” and “Myra Breckinridge” (which was rated X at the time). An advertisement for the Hillcrest Theater proclaimed “Former K.U. Student, Don Johnson, Stars In ‘The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart.'” (Johnson was 21 and making his feature film debut.)
