From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 6, 1986:

• Lawrence city commissioners were considering a request by “Lawrence Kansans for Life” to proclaim the week of Jan. 18 “Abortion Awareness Week.” A representative from the local group said that the week was intended to provide information about abortion. The executive director of Kansas National Abortion Rights Action League said that she was planning to attend the commission meeting and oppose the proclamation.
• Mike Hayden, who had been serving in the Kansas House of Representatives for 13 years, announced that he was a candidate for Republican nomination for governor in the August 1986 primary election. Democrat John Carlin, who was entering the final year of his second term as governor, was ineligible under the state Constitution to seek a third term.
• Two burglaries were reported during the weekend. The northeast door of the Hillcrest Theatres at Ninth and Iowa had been forced open, causing $4,000 in damages. The burglars had been unsuccessful in their attempts to pry open the safe. Also, there had been a break-in at the Student Loan Marketing Assn., then located at 3210 Mesa Way, where an estimated $4,625 in computer equipment had been stolen.
