100 years ago: Train crash in Mulvane causes late arrivals in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 6, 1911:

  • “Running at a high rate of speed, northbound Santa Fe passenger No. 18 due here at 5:26 crashed into the rear end of a heavy freight train a mile south of Mulvane last night. Engineer John Shields and Fireman C. H. Zernstein, of the leading engine of No. 18, were both killed, and also Brakeman W. T. Sias, who was believed to have been riding on the engine. No passengers were injured, although several were shaken up. All equipment was saved except the mail and baggage cars, which were destroyed by fire.”
  • “Isaac Baker, the Lawrence boy arrested here this week for robbing a Wichita store of several suits of clothes and men’s furnishings, was taken back to that city for trial last night. The Lawrence boy was arrested by Officer Prentice on Massachusetts at the instigation of the owner of the stolen garments. He was wearing some of the clothes at the time.”
  • “Patrons of a certain Lawrence restaurant were kind to one of the working girls on Christmas. Those who sat at her tables made a purse of $16.75 and gave it to her as a Christmas present. This is more than she could have earned in three weeks.”
