100 years ago: Water company denies rumors of insufficient water pressure during recent Mass St. fire

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 22, 1911:

  • “There have been many stories afloat since the Bowersock fire relative to weak and deficient pressure shown in the water mains. At times it was impossible to throw water much higher than the second story. While the Water Company does not say so, it intimates that the trouble lay with the hose of the fire department or its method of opening the hydrants.”
  • “Mina Mikesell is the most proficient bread maker among Lawrence school girls, according to three competent judges who tasted ten loaves submitted by as many contestants in the [high school] domestic science course.”
  • [Advertisement] “Boost Lawrence!
