40 years ago: President Nixon proposes health-care changes
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 20, 1971:
- President Nixon proposed a package of health-care proposals, offering an alternative to Democratic proposals for national health insurance. Nixon’s plans ranged from new legislation requiring all businesses to furnish employees with comprehensive health insurance, to a new program of federally funded private health insurance to replace most of the federal-state Medicaid program.
- Just past mid-February, Lawrence was already under a tornado watch. A few thunderstorms with large hail and locally damaging winds were in the forecast.
- The Lawrence Paper Co., then located at Sixth and N.H., reported a break-in and robbery in which a warehouse office door had been forced. Missing were a $400 calculator, a $75 adding machine, and a $30 radio.
